    HISTORY OF THE PEACE COMMITTEE

    On October 29, 1956, Egypt's President, Gamal Abderl Nasser, nationalized the Suez Canal and banned the passage of Israeli ships through the canal.

    Nasser's attitude displeased the English and French who maintained a monopoly on this important route of navigation.

    The reaction of the parties that felt hurt would not take long: Within a few hours the military intervention of Europeans and Jews would begin. While the English and French occupied the Channel area, Israel invaded the Sinai Peninsula and occupied the Jordanian enclave, west of the Jordan River, in such a way that part of the holy city of Jerusalem was within Israel's borders.

    Both the United States and the UURSS , opposed acts of war, but it was from the Soviet Union that the ultimatum was launched so that the invading forces would abandon their positions. Suffering from diplomatic pressures by the UN and the two great powers, the Europeans soon withdrew and the Jews a year later.

    CREATION OF UNEF

    The Egyptian president seeks protection from the UN o, on November 3, 1956 the UNEF, United Nations Emergency Force , was created. Then the “Blue Berets” enter the scene establishing themselves in the Gaza Strip, an area 100 km long by 10 km wide.

    This Emergency Force was formed by contingents from Brazil, Canada, India, Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Yugoslavia. Each of these groups had an average of 600 men, between officers and officers, for a total of 4,200, representing the seven nations for a year, renewing their numbers each year.

    The Brazilian contingent, formed mostly by members of Minas Gerais, from the 4th Army Division, convened on 08/05/1959, fulfilled its mission in a year and a half: On the 5th of August 1989, it celebrates the 30 years of its convocation with an important ceremony to be held in the 12th Infantry Battalion and 4th Brigade gymnasium, in Belo Horizonte, promoted by ABIB and 12th BI.

    UNEF'S MISSION

    The mission of the UN Peacekeeping Force established in the Gaza Strip, along the ADL , Artistic Demarcation Line, that is, the physical and political border between Israel and Egypt, was to observe and patrol the area, preventing Arab or Jewish elements from crossing the line.

    The sentries who worked P. O (observation post) had weapons only for self-defense, in addition to binoculars and a telephone. Peacekeepers would not participate in the existing conflict, they would only observe the two conflicting parties: Arabs and Jews. And so it was during UNEF's ten years of activity in the area.

    It was not easy to accomplish the mission due to a series of difficulties encountered in the area:

    - Psychological shock by the exchange of the Fatherland by the foreign country with very different natural and human landscapes; having to disable expensive mines for our lives.

    - Difficulty in expressing yourself in a foreign language;

    - Rigorous climatic variations, with temperatures that fluctuated between 50 º degrees centigrade (by day) and O º (at night), in addition to sand storms;

    - Intake of brackish water (treated sea water);

    - Area of the most endemic in the world: leprosy, tuberculosis and trachoma, among other diseases, which forced the herds to undergo a battery of vaccines for immunization;

    - Existence of scorpions, vipers and other venomous animals.

    - Precarious accommodation in canvas and wood tents, subject to bad weather;

    - Minefields, without proper mapping to allow travel on dangerous journeys.

    - Land mined with lost vital organs and even life itself, as occurred with some unfortunate companions. In other cases, there were colleagues who, due to the tension experienced day by day with threats from both sides (I mean the Fedains Egyptian soldiers and the Israeli Kibbutz people) who had to tie themselves up first and that was terrible and fear, panic, nerves, made less strong colleagues run crazy!

    There were many problems, but the mission won the 1988 Nobel Peace Prize that we brought to our country.

    THE WORLD PEACE COMMITTEE

    The World Peace Committee was created to fight and obtain improvements for our class, in addition to despite the state of calamity that we are going through, we propose to carry out a work of the Committee's own initiative, within the scope of philanthropy, as we have been face to face with misery, that our ideals of fighting for a fairer and more humane world, does not allow us to turn a blind eye to our brothers in Africa, Kenya, Tanzania, Luanda, Rwanda, Mozambique, Haiti, etc.

    We ratify that the Peace Committee is a non-governmental, non-profit organization recognized by the World Federation of Philanthropic Entities and provides solidarity services in the field of Human Rights and that since 1988 it obtained through the UN the Nobel Peace Prize for the mission of the Canal de Suez 1957/67, in which we, the founders, were members of the Peace Forces and are therefore part of this recognition, besides of course obtaining the mention of honor recognized by various organizations specialized in human rights inside and outside the country.
